Building Equity: Sustaining BIPOC in STEM

Dr. Ruby Mendenhall and three rising Class of 2021 Seniors, Tolulope Adejuyigbe, Roaa Marei, and Nilah Marshall join C2ST to discuss how non-white STEM students experience racism in college and beyond. Dr. Mendenhall will detail how racial microaggressions affect BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students’ health and sense of belonging in STEM. Mental Help: Impacts of Loneliness & Social Isolation in Older Adults

Dr. Cynthia Boyd (John Hopkins), Dr. Tracy Lustig (The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine), and Dr. Carla Perissinotto (UCSF) will overview the mental health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. These senior experts will also offer strategies from an individual to a population health level to mitigate the impacts.

Taste of Science: Fermented Beverages

Over the last decade there has been a health craze brewing over kombucha (kuhm-boo-chuh) and other fermented drinks and food (e.g., yogurt, kefir, miso, sauerkraut, and kimchi). Like coffee and tea, kombucha has origins dating back to over 2,000 years ago. As kombucha spread across the world due to expanding trade routes, so did the number of beneficial health claims. What is kombucha and does this superfood live up to its reputation?
