Science film series to launch with ‘A Beautiful Mind’ screening, discussion

The University of Chicago’s new Science on the Screen series will begin with a showing of the Academy Award-winning movie, A Beautiful Mind, starring Russell Crowe, beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 in Screening Room 201 of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts.

Science on the Screen is sponsored by the UChicago Arts | Science Initiative, the Office of the Vice President for Research and for National Laboratories, and the Chicago Council on Science and Technology. This new series will focus on the cinematic portrayal of science, technology, engineering and mathematics through screenings and discussions with leading UChicago experts.

A discussion about the impact of John F. Nash Jr.’s work and the challenges he faced will follow the screening. Nash, whom Crowe portrayed in the movie, received the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his landmark work on the mathematics of game theory.

Participating in the discussion will be 2007 Nobel laureate Roger Myerson, the Glen A. Lloyd Distinguished Service Professor in Economics; and Michael Marcangelo, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience. Moderating the discussion will be Robert Rosenberg, associate vice president for communications and adjunct associate professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Admission is $7, or $5 with student identification. Reservations are required, with tickets available at the Logan Center box office or online
