C2ST Presents: Crime, Evidence, and the Law

If a threat arises that challenges the foundation of American society, the FBI is on the case.

Whether it’s a terrorist attack, a cyber-attack, white-collar crime, violent crime or espionage, the FBI must quickly and carefully gather evidence that can be introduced in courts throughout the U.S. and the World.

Join Chicago Council on Science and Technology for ‘Crime, Evidence and the Law,’ a program that will highlight the mission, training and work by members of the FBI’s Evidence Response Team (ERT).  The talk will feature Special Agent Douglas Seccombe, Senior Team Leader of the Evidence Response Team of FBI’s Chicago office. The Chicago ERT office is called on about 100 times per year, on both Federal cases, and to aid in state and local investigations as requested.

Special Agent Seccombe has over 20 years of experience with the bureau, which includes investigations into fugitives, white collar crime, street gangs, and 18 years as a member of the Chicago FBI ERT. SA Seccombe was involved in the investigation of the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya in 1998, the crash of United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, the exhumation and autopsy of civil rights martyr Emmett Till in 2005, and the recovery of disinterred human remains at Burr Oak Cemetery in 2009.

In addition to discussing the training and tools of the FBI’s ERT, SA Seccombe will depict special training sites such as Body Farms, anthropological research facilities dedicated to the study of the decomposition of bodies. Seccombe will also discuss FBI investigations such as the terrorist downing of Flight 93.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held Thursday, November 8 at the Hughes Auditorium at Northwestern University Chicago Campus, 303 East Superior, Chicago, IL.
