C2ST Speakeasy with Tejas Shastry

What’s the deal with wearable technology? At Geek Bar Chicago’s SCIENCE! Tuesday

Wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers have brought us closer to quantifying our lives, but will they truly change the way we interact with the world?

This talk explores how the right combination of advances in energy harvesting, big data, and artificial intelligence could enable wearable devices to truly become digital extensions of us as humans. Join Chicago Council on Science and Technology for a night of fun and exploration at Geek Bar Beta’s SCIENCE! Tuesday.

Tejas Shastry is the CEO and Co-Founder of AMPY, a Chicago-based company building smarter batteries for smartphones and wearables. Its first consumer product is the AMPY One Motion Charger, a wearable device that turns a user’s movement into power for their USB devices. The Ampy team raised over $300,000 in Kickstarter funding for their launch campaign last year. Their wearable device stores the kinetic energy you generate in an internal lithium ion battery. Plug in your smartphone or another device into the USB port to start charging. According to Ampy, you can power a smartphone for three hours with the energy generated by walking 10,000 steps, bicycling an hour or running for 30 minutes. Shastry is a Ph.D. Candidate at Northwestern University in Material Science, and was recently named to Forbes “30 under 30.”

ABOUT C2ST: Chicago Council on Science and Technology is a not-for-profit organization that brings researchers and scientists out of the lab, directly to you. We work with national laboratories, leading academic institutions and museums to educate the public on issues of critical scientific importance. In an age when barely one in four voting adults meet a basic level of scientific literacy, we aim to reignite an excitement and passion for science and technology, and remind Chicagoans of the quality and quantity of R&D that takes place in their backyard.
