Science in the City Annual Gala 2016

C2ST’s Science in the City Gala 2016

Please join C2ST for our sixth annual fundraiser gala, Science in the City, on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at UI Labs on Goose Island from 5:00 to 9:00 PM.

Enjoy stimulating conversation with leaders of Chicago’s scientific, business and philanthropic community, take a tour of the digital manufacturing lab** and enjoy a plated dinner. Chicago-based distillery KOVAL will also be hosting a tasting of its spirits. Proceeds from this event will support C2ST’s programming efforts to educate the public on scientific issues of critical importance.

UI Labs is a Chicago-based research and commercialization collaborative, bringing Universities + Industries together to define problems, design partnerships and deliver scalable solutions to tomorrow’s most important challenges.

Attire is business.

The evening will be hosted by Cristal Thomas, vice president for community health engagement, University of Chicago Medicine, and senior advisor to the vice president for civic engagment at the university. She has served as deputy governor of Illinois, Region V Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, executive director of the Ohio Executive Medicaid Management Administration, Ohio Medicaid director, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, and policy analyst in the White House Office of Management and Budget.

We will present the 2016 “Advancing the Public Understanding of Science & Technology Award” to Dr. Lucianne Walkowicz who is an Astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. C2ST created this award in 2012 to honor individuals who share in the passion and mission of the organization—to increase the awareness of the great R&D taking place in our region.

The recipient of Chicago Council on Science and Technology’s “Advancing the Public Understanding of Science & Technology Award’ will be fêted at the gala event. C2ST created this award in 2012 to honor individuals who share in the passion and mission of the organization—to increase the awareness of the great R&D taking place in our region. Join us as we honor the recipient of this year’s award, Dr. Lucianne Walkowicz, an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. Walkowicz studies stellar magnetic activity and how stars influence a planet’s suitability as a host for alien life. She is a 2012 TED Senior Fellow, a 2011 National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellow, and has been internationally recognized for her advocacy for conservation of dark night skies. In 2015, she was named to Crain’s ’40 Under 40’ list. Walkowicz spends half her time speaking with the public and helping create exciting new ways to engage people with scientific discovery.

This is a not-to-be missed opportunity to celebrate science and technology in Chicago!
