C2ST and Argonne National Laboratory are excited to continue our 75th anniversary partnership celebration by taking a close look at how Argonne made its name–the production of clean nuclear energy. The lab has grown extensively since its founding, tackling an array of societal challenges in science, energy, the environment, and national security, but nuclear research was there at the start and is still an important part of Argonne’s portfolio today.

In the same way nuclear fission breaks down atomic nuclei, Dr. Krista Hawthorne will break down the energy source responsible for nearly 60% of Illinois’ electricity generation. In this 30 minute presentation followed by 30 minutes of Q&A, Dr. Hawthorne will discuss nuclear energy history, how nuclear reactors work, and what exciting current research is happening in creating fuel for the next generation of nuclear reactors.
