PI Day STEAM Night at Hernandez Middle School

The goal of the Pi Day Family STEAM Night event is to ignite curiosity in STEM and the Arts through the mathematical patterns found all around us.

Communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking are important skills to develop for 21st-century careers. At Hernandez Middle School (HMS), all students work on developing these skills throughout their classes. At the STEM event, participants will engage in activities related to one of the 5C’s that shows connections between STEM, the Arts, and their daily lives. Possible sessions include: exploring fractals, and learning a math based magic trick.

Join us as we celebrate excellent public STEM outreach with academic and industry leaders, educators, community members, and young professionals from across Chicagoland.

Trip Report: A Research Visit to Fermilab

I am an assistant professor of computer science at Illinois Institute of Technology, where I work on developing cutting-edge techniques in computer networking and applying them to solve problems in other scientific fields and cybersecurity. During summer 2023 I had the good fortune of visiting Fermilab, the United States’s renowned research facility dedicated to high-energy particle physics and particle accelerator laboratory, to work on research. The research investigated how new computer networking techniques can support the science that’s being done at Fermilab. Temporarily transplanting my work to a different research environment helped generate new research ideas, and taught me a lot about working with scientists in research areas outside of computer networking.

The Impact of Environmental Chemicals on Reproductive Health

Hormones help regulate various body processes such as growth, metabolism, mood, and reproduction. We can think of our body’s endocrine system as one that acts like a communication hub where hormones are used as messengers! Certain chemicals, which can be natural or human-made, can play tricks by either mimicking hormones, blocking them, or interfering with their production or breakdown; We call these sneaky trickster chemicals endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). EDCs can be found in things we use every day like certain plastics, pesticides, and some products like cosmetics or cleaning agents. In short, we are exposed to EDCs through the air, water, or food we consume. What are the potential effects of subjection to these disruptors, even in small amounts? What health concerns should we be looking out for as a result of exposure? Join C2ST and Dr. Jodi Flaws to learn more about the impacts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproductive health and more!

C2ST is partnering with Instituto Cervantes for a conversation between María Blasco, Scientific Director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and Head of the Telomeres and Telomerase Group (CNIO); Human Cell Atlas leader Sarah Teichmann, and artist Daniel Canogar, renowned for his algorithm-based installations, as they discuss their collaboration at the intersection of art, science, and technology.
