French Innovation Week is a celebration of French innovation and savoir-faire in Chicago and the Midwest.

The 5th Annual French Innovation Week will take place in May 2018 with a variety of events throughout the Midwest that showcase the best of French science, technology, innovation and more.

The series of events will include free public lectures given by leading French scientists, panel discussions, hands-on activities for hundreds of young students, presentations by French leaders of cutting-edge technological advances and the 26th Gala evening of the French-American Chamber of Commerce celebrating French Innovation.

CONFERENCE WITH A FRENCH SCIENTIST: Climate Change and Viral Emergence in Humans and Domestic Animals

A public lecture by Dr. Jean Claude Manuguerra (Director of the Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats at the Institut Pasteur) on the evolutionary events that can lead to vaccine-resistant viruses, followed by Q&A with the audience and a wine and cheese reception.

Studies suggest a link between climate change, human modifications to the environment, and the emergence of new viruses. Dr. Manuguerra will present how unsustainable environmental practices can lead to new diseases and vaccine-resistant viral agents.

Climate change along with human modifications to the environment such as novel agricultural or breeding practices may lead to the emergence of unknown viral agents. These agents can then be carried by farm animals which become intermediate hosts for humans.

Dr Manuguerra heads a research team focused on Environment and Infectious risks based in a Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats (CIBU). The CIBU it was founded in 2002 in response to “specialized biological emergencies”. These emergencies include epidemics, accidents, or terrorist attacks using biological weapons, which can all endanger public health. Most recently, the world faced a very serious Ebola virus epidemic. While the Ebola epidemic remains critical, the dynamics of other viruses are also of great concern.

Dr. Manuguerra will review evolutionary events that can lead to vaccine-resistant viruses, and how unsustainable environmental practices could bring about previously unknown pathogens. Everyone is invited to learn more about how the evolution of molecular tools allow us to characterize emerging viral agents.

Dr. Jean Claude Manuguerra holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences' from the faculty of Pharmacy from the Université Paris XI at Châtenay-Malabry (France). He was appointed Head of the 'Environment and Infectious Risks' research team at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France. He also manages the Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats (CIBU). He is a member of the Steering Committee of the Global Alert and Response Network (GOARN) coordinated by the World Health Organization and acted as Chair of this committee for an 18 month term. He is the French Representative to the Laboratory Network of the Global Health Security Action Group of the G7, and Corresponding Member of the French Veterinary Academy. He is also the Chief Editor of the 'Intervirology' Journal.
